What are Doshas in Ayurveda?


Ayurveda defines about 3 doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. As per Ayurveda, the doshas are the different energies of universal life forces accordance with the philosophy. The human body is a combination of these three forces and it is one's personal blueprint from conception. But according to the person’s environment, age, diet, seasons of life, routine of lifestyle and various other reasons the doshas proportions changes. The change of doshas constitution and imbalances impacts person’s health and energy.

Your body type is determined by the characteristics of doshas. The doshas are consisted with 5 elements of nature where one dosha consists with 2 of those nature elements.


It is important to understand your personal dosha and balance in order to achieve your optimum health.

1.     Vata

Vata controls body motions. The main function of Vata dosha is communication and movement. It includes circulation of blood, breathing, pulse of heart, contractions of muscles, cells movements and the communication of mind and nervous system.

With balanced of the Vata dosha these people are good thinkers, flexible and creative. The out of balance of Vata feels fear, digestive issues and anxiety. These persons are thin, has dry skin, cold hands, quickly grab knowledge and forgets quickly, also gets cold often.

2.     Pitta

 The main function of Pitta dosha is overseeing digestion and transformation. Pitta energy controls body metabolic and represents energy transformation. It is related to intelligence, digestion, nutrients, emotions, metabolism and body temperature.

With Pitta dosha balance people are intelligent, focused, ambitious and passionate about life. The out of balance results digestive problems such as ulcers, gets headaches and rashes, they are over stressed and has excessive anger. These persons with balanced pitta have characteristics such as competitive, like to undertake challengers, strong, self-confident and sharp in mind.

3.     Kapha

These people have large body types. Kapha controls body growth. This energy supplies water to all body parts and helps immune system functioning. The cohesiveness, structure, and lubrication is supported by kapha dosha. These people are strong.

With balanced of the Kapha dosha they will be very calm, lovable and forgive. The imbalance of the kapha dosha creates insecurity, poor circulation, leads obesity. The persons with balanced kapha have characteristics such as relaxed, forgiving, easygoing, very strong, learns slowly but has long term memory, very gentle, has a soft voice etc..
