Panchakarma are 5 (five) in number; hence the term PANCHA (five) – KARMA (procedures) and it is involves the bio- purification of body, mind and spirit. It is also known as ‘Shodhana Chikitsa’ which literally means ‘cleansing treatment’. It is based on Ayurvedic principles, every human is unique phenomenon manifested through the five basic elements of Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Combination of these elements are three doshas (tridosha): Three doshas of the body, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which broadly represent the nervous system, the metabolic system and the nutritive system, keep the human body in balance. Whenever the delicate balance between these doshas is disturbed, a disease may be manifested. The main objective of the Ayurvedic system of treatment is to restore the original state of equilibrium between the doshas. Panchakarma treatment is unique in the sense that it includes preventive, curative and promotive actions for various diseases.
What are the 5 types of Panchakarma?
Panchakarma stands for 5 different cleansing methods i.e. Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis), Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation) and Vasti (Therapeutic enema), Nasya (nasal insufflations of medicines that nourish or aid elimination of toxins through nose) and Rakta Mokshana (Therapeutic Blood-letting). They help in cleansing the body and have a relaxing effect on the body and mind.
