What is Mental Health?

Whether you are young, old, rich or poor the mental health matters. It affects everybody.  The mental health is associated with the social and emotional well-being of a person. Being mentally healthy is a pathway leading to the overall wellness. It reflects how we feel, how we act in the everyday life. Mental health can be affected by many factors; biological, psychological, social and environmental factors.

You are not healthy without mental health because your general health is influenced by mental health.

It is not that good mental health is you are not going through bad times such as disappointments, emotional problems, stress etc.. It is how you bounce back facing those in a better way. Every day you will have to face challengers or something new or out of your control. With good mental well-being you are well prepared to face them easily with a strength which is internal.

Having a poor mental health for a longer period can lead to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety etc.  A good mental well-being is so important to build up your self-esteem, self-confidence, to be productive and to live your life happily.

With strengthened mental well-being, you are flexible to adapt for changes, to learn new things, maintain good relationships, ability in dealing with stress and balance between work, rest and other activities of life. Thus, maintaining a strong mental health is of vitally important.

How to become mentally strong and healthy?

These simple tips will help you to become mentally healthy.

·         Get sleep and rest - Being so busy throughout the day a person uses all of the body energy. The brain is awakened throughout the day and it needs rest. Therefore, to boost the energy back and to ensure mental health adequate sleep is a must.

·         Take time to enjoy life – Do something you like; Listen to music, meet a friend, go outdoors. This will help to enjoy your life.

·         Be physically active - The mind and body is connected. When physical health is improved it enhances the mental health and emotional well-being automatically. Thus, regular exercises is required to be healthy.

·         Eat well – Food affects the mood. Unhealthy diet disrupts sleep, make immunity system weak and you will not feel good. Nutritious healthy foods will always support the brain, overall health and the mood. So make sure that you eat healthy diet.

·         Build good connections - Good relationships shares positivity and emotional support when required.

·         Learn to manage stress – Stress can weaken your mental health. It should be kept under control.

·         Be mindful - This means you should pay attention to the present. This will help to understand more about yourself and will improve mental well-being.

·         Spend time with nature - This will help to reduce stress and improves the mood. The time with nature relaxes mind and helps enjoying the moment.

·         Practice relaxation techniques - Yoga and meditation practices helps to reduce stress level and to balances the mind and body.
